干扰素是真核细胞对各种刺激作出反应而自然形成的一组复杂的蛋白质。如果用医学上更为详细的说法则是：干扰素是由病毒和其他种类的干扰素诱导剂，刺激网状内皮系统（人体免疫系统的一种）、巨噬细胞、淋巴细胞以及体细胞所产生的一种糖蛋白。这种蛋白具有多种生物活性，包括抗增殖、免疫调节、抗病毒和诱导分化作用。

根据干扰素蛋白质的氨基酸结构、抗原性和细胞来源，可将其分为：IFN-α、IFN-β、IFN-γ。IFN-ω属于IFN-α家族，其结构和大小与其它IFN-α稍有差异，但抗原性有较大的不同。现在公认IFN-β和IFN-γ只有一个亚型，而IFN-α有约二十余个亚型。自80年代以来，许多研究显示，干扰素(尤其是α-干扰素及γ-干扰素)除具有抗病毒、免疫调节的作用外，还具有明显的抗细胞增殖作用。因此，目前干扰素已被用于治疗多种白血病。
利用基因工程生产的重组α-干扰素和人自然干扰素两大类。
基因工程干扰素再按基因表达分子结构和抗原性可分为α、β、γ型，同一型内按氨基酸组成差异再分20多个亚型：α1、α2、α3……在同一亚型内又因氨基酸的差异而细分，如α2：有三种：α2a、α2b、α2c。
人自然干扰素是通过分别刺激淋巴母细胞和人体白细胞，然后提纯制备而得。目前市场供应的只有由类淋巴母细胞产生的干扰素（IFN）…αN1，是天然的多亚型的混合物。临床用的主要是重组制剂，有α2a、α2b和α2b。
